A Narrative Inquiry of an Old Woman Seeking the Meaning of Life by Art Therapy

Abstract
This study aimed to figure out what a female elderly person experiences through art therapy and the meaning of the experience by using narrative inquiry method. The study participant was a 83-year-old woman who complained the symptoms such as suicidal thinking and depression. Twenty one sessions of art therapy based on logotherapy were performed for this study subject from April to September in 2016. Data from the art therapy process were collected including all the conversation contents, artworks, observation records, and so on. Based on the analysis results from the collected data, seven topics were deducted from her art therapy experiences; ¡®this is my first time in my life,¡¯ ¡®I recall my sad past life,¡¯ ¡®no woman lived like this,¡¯ ¡®I have lived diligently with patience looking for my son,¡¯ ¡®a heart of resentment is exposed and solved,¡¯ ¡®it applies the medicine to my mind which is all about trauma,¡¯ and ¡®I met myself who had been lost from the picture.¡¯ Based on these experience stories, the following meanings of the experiences were deducted; ¡®my body and soul were healed by art therapist and arts,¡¯ ¡®my existence becomes alive in the picture,¡¯ and ¡®Now, the pictures become the presents of my life.¡¯ From these art therapy experiences, the process to seek the meaning of life in an old woman and the meanings of the experiences were understood in detail.
